Working It Together

Over the last few months I have travelled around (and around!) New Zealand talking to a host of different businesses about health and well being. Along my way, as well as meeting some fabulous people, I picked up some really great ideas which I just really have to share!

One of my stops was in Wellington at Eftpos New Zealand – a workplace with a really fantastic culture and a few healthy things going on. On the day that I was there, rather than having a ‘bake-off’, a bunch of very talented people hosted a ‘soup-off’, selling homemade soups and bread rolls at lunch time to staff and raising money for charity. The event was a HIT (see the photo!) and it really made me realise that for healthy workplace culture… it really starts from the inside out.

With so many of us spending long hours at work, it really does matter what you eat while you are there. Yes, the odd biscuit, vino and chocolate is by no means a crime, but having regular morning teas with sausage rolls and muffins along with coffee after coffee is just not helpful when it comes to getting the best from yourself. The reality is, you get used to routine, you get used to what you know and sometimes the thought of leaving your sweet work treats behind seems a little daunting, but – when you know how good you can feel by eating well, you will never go back!

My challenge to you is to try and do something this week to change the health culture in your workplace:

  • Try a ‘soup-off’ yourself and when summer comes round a ‘salad-off’ should be on the cards
  • Next time there’s a morning tea or bring and share, why not bring a fruit platter…it always gets eaten!
  • If you have unhealthy snacks lurking around the office at all times – is there someone you can talk to at work who might be able to make it easier for healthy snacks to be available instead?
  • Walk away from the coffee machine and move to the kettle – get into your herbal and green teas rather than making yourself another latte
  • Have a healthy Friday ‘bring and share’ lunch – take turns in your office to try new things :o)
