HAPPY New Year; 2012 is here!
Mission Nutrition Blog - 17th January 2011
With the turn of the new year it’s a good time to remember that when it comes to living that healthy, balanced life and looking after yourself, enjoying what you have, setting goals to reach and getting the most out of everyday, that there is no point waiting for the perfect time to live the life you REALLY want – because that time will never come! Having recently lost a friend, seen the trauma of lost lives through the various accidents and mishaps that have happened already this year in NZ, it’s time to face the truth – today is the day to make the best of what you have, forgive yourself for whatever mistakes you have made in the past, learn from failed last attempts and take a moment to realise your life can be anything you want it to be – if you choose it.
So, as today is here…what better time to take a moment right here, right now to think about what this year will hold for you…and how you are going to make everyday (yes, even the horrible blue days!) the best they can be and get the best from you!
Reaching your goals this year
Setting a goal, a dream, a vision or whatever you like to call it can be a really good way to start looking at what you want to get out of the year ahead. But setting a goal by itself isn’t enough, the REALLY important part comes in working out the road path, map or journey of how you will reach your goal and also addressing any obstacles which might get in your way. It is all very well to follow your hopes and dreams on a good day, but there will be times when things aren’t always rosey, and how do you still stay focused then?!
The weight loss goal
This is a good example to discuss at it seems to be on the top of so many people’s New Years resolution lists. To lose weight (and keep it off) sadly it is not about the cabbage soup diet, starting the lemon detox diet or eating only baby food (which I read in the paper this week is the new way celebs are doing it, dear Lord!), because although these approaches will make you lose weight at the time, in the long term they are such unhealthy solutions which just breed a ‘dieting’ mentality and in the end are only likely to make you fatter (given that most people end up regaining more weight than they lose after being on these diets and then trying to eat normally again). A much better way to address weight loss this year is to firstly get yourself into healthy habits and routines (which will allow you to eat well all year long!) and then work on all the things that will stop you from losing weight and addressing these one at a time.
STEP 1:
Create Healthy Habits; your road map
- PLAN SMART: Planning your meals ahead is the easiest way to get things on track
- SHOP SMART: Address the types of foods that you are buying – make healthier choices (come on one of our supermarket tours and we will show you how!
STEP 2:
Overcome challenges and deal with the bumps in the road
Once you have your road map and a plan for how you would ‘ideally’ like to be eating, it is time to look at the things which may lead you off track or make it hard to eat as well as you would like. Do you have 3 milky coffees a day out of habit? Do you eat when you are bored? Do you serve yourself portions that are bigger than you need? Does your healthy eating go out of the window at the weekend? Being able to idenfity your ‘TRIGGER’ areas, as I call them, is KEY to being able to get weight off and keep it off – because even if you know everything about eating well, applying what you know is impossible if you have unhelpful default behaviours which mean you sabotage your goal – often without meaning to!
Good luck with this and remember, we're always here to help if and when you need us!
