Why do you eat when you do?

Many of us think our eating decisions are based purely on hunger, but often there is much more going on.

Taking a moment to notice why you're eating can help you better understand your habits and make choices that feel right for you.

Autopilot mode

Sometimes we eat without really thinking about it. Our eating is driven by habits, routines, convenience or what's happening around us, rather than physical hunger.

Common examples include:

  • Picking and nibbling while cooking

  • Eating simply because food is there

  • Finishing food because it's on your plate

  • Snacking while watching TV or scrolling on your phone

  • Eating because it's a certain time of day

  • Reaching for food out of boredom

  • Using food to manage difficult emotions such as stress, loneliness, frustration or sadness

Reactive response

At other times, our eating is a reaction to something happening around us or within us. This might be a stressful day at work, feeling tired, skipping meals, seeing tempting food, or simply being unprepared and overly hungry.

The more aware you become of your eating triggers, the easier it becomes to respond in ways that support your health and wellbeing.

If you're struggling with emotional eating, mindless snacking, binge eating, food cravings, or feeling out of control around food, you're not alone.

At Mission Nutrition, our Dietitians and Nutritionists can help you understand your eating patterns, build healthier habits, and develop a more positive relationship with food - without guilt, judgement or restrictive diets.
